Sometimes people say to me, “not everyone needs counseling. Is it really important to talk about your issues? Why not just think of something positive and move on?” I would agree, not everyone needs counseling but most people could really use counseling. The reason being the brain does not naturally disprove thoughts it thinks will keep it comfortable and safe.

Have you ever said something out of your mouth that you have been thinking like, “I just hate that person” and then when you say it and put actual words to it you begin to realize it isn’t exactly the way you feel? In fact, it is a little stronger than you really feel. If you take a couple of steps further you might even see that it’s more about what the person is triggering in you that you hate.
And if you think a little further you might be able to see how this strong emotion of yours affects your behavior towards them, contributes to your perspective influencing your behavior, and finally keeps you trapped in a habitual looping behavior.
Emotion organizes action towards others. Counseling can help you make sense of your emotional life. It can help you identify the emotions that are keeping you stuck, holding you back, and causing chaos in your life. We may need help in identifying and understanding our emotional world so that we can make sense of it, bring it into a more ordered state, and identify areas to help us live closer to our values.
